FACULTY
 AND STAFF

Martin Sanda, M.D.

Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Urology

Dr. Sanda joined the University of Michigan faculty in July of 1995 as Assistant Professor of Urology and Oncology. Since 1998 he has served as Clinical Director of Urological Oncology in the Department of Urology.  He previously completed a urology residency at Johns Hopkins and a clinical and research fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Prior to that, he received his M.D. degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and his B.A., cum laude, at Yale University.

Dr. Sanda's clinical practice focuses on surgery for urological cancers. He learned to perform nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy under Dr. Patrick Walsh (who had developed this operation) at Johns Hopkins, and has performed over 200 of these operations. Of patients who have had radical prostatectomy by Dr. Sanda, over 90% have had no clinical recurrence, and a significant proportion have recovered erections. Dr. Sanda also has specific expertise in radical cystectomy and surgical construction of neobladders.

Dr. Sanda also directs an NIH-funded translational research effort in tumor immunology, apoptosis, and clinical outcomes. His bench to bedside research has been recognized by over a dozen academic or national prizes and awards. Two postdoctoral fellows, 2 research associates, and 2 research assistants comprise the laboratory group undertaking this research. Dr. Sanda served on several NIH Review Committees, and is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Urological Association. Individuals mentored in their research by Dr. Sanda have succeeded in securing positions both in academic medicine and in clinical practice.
