Dr. Pienta

Kenneth J. Pienta, M.D.

Professor of Internal Medicine and Urology

Dr. Kenneth Pienta is a Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and a Professor of Urology at the University of Michigan Medical School.  Dr. Pienta maintains an active clinical practice devoted exclusively to the treatment of patients with advanced prostate cancer.  He is also an active researcher and an associate editor of the journal Urology.  

Dr. Pienta attended the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees.  While there, he was the Henry Strong Denison Scholar and was also awarded the American Urological Association Student Scholarship.  From Johns Hopkins, Dr. Pienta moved to the University of Chicago Hospitals where he completed his residency training.  He then returned to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to do a clinical fellowship in Oncology.  He was awarded a clinical investigatorship and Diplomate by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  Dr. Pienta then moved to Michigan where he worked at Wayne State University and Harper Hospital in Detroit.  In 1994, he moved to the University of Michigan. 

Dr. Pienta's research focuses on prostate cancer and addresses it at different levels.  In regards to treatment, Dr. Pienta is involved with clinical trials that study the effectiveness of different agents and combinations of therapies on the progression of the disease.  Dr. Pienta is also interested in the natural history of prostate cancer and the mechanisms that lead to bone metastases.  Dr. Pienta's research has been supported by a $4.35 million grant from the National Institutes of Health which allowed for the establishment of a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Prostate Cancer at the University of Michigan.  Dr. Pienta is also the principal investigator on several other grants supporting research on prostate cancer.

Dr. Pienta has presented his work and expertise at over seventy-five conferences and meetings on the local, regional, national and international levels.  He has also authored or co-authored over 200 publications including over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles, 60 invited manuscripts or books and book chapters and over one hundred abstracts.
