Jill A. Macoska, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Urology

Jill A. Macoska, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of and is Director of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center cDNA and Affymetrix Microarray Core.

Dr. Macoska graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Kent State University in Ohio with a degree in Physical Anthropology, then completed a PhD program in Biochemistry at the City University of New York (CUNY).  She subsequently pursued postdoctoral fellowships in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard University and in the Genetics Program at the Michigan Cancer Foundation.  Her independent research career began in the Department of Urology at Wayne State University, where she was awarded the prestigious Ph.D. Scholar Award from the American Foundation of Urologic Disease (AFUD).  In 1994, Dr. Macoska joined the Urology faculty at the University of Michigan.   She has since been awarded both the New Investigator Award by AFUD and the Young Investigator Award by the Society for Basic Urologic Research/Merck.

Dr. Macoska’s laboratory research is focused on the elucidation of genetic alterations contributing to the initiation and early promotion of tumorigenesis in the prostate.   Much of this work centers on the identification of tumor suppressor genes mapping to the 8p chromosomal region in human prostate tumors using allelotyping and cDNA microarray techniques.  Recently, Dr. Macoska’s laboratory has taken an active interest in elucidating stromal/epithelial interactions during early malignant transformation in the prostate.  This research is currently supported by awards from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).  Past support has been awarded from the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Department of Defense (DOD).

Dr. Macoska has served as past Editor of the Basic Science Section of the journal Urology and as a Member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Basic Urologic Research (SBUR).  She has participated in peer review panels for the NCI, NIDDK, DOD and ACS, and is currently a permanent review panel member for the ACS.  Dr. Macoska has authored and co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications, has written several book chapters, and has presented papers at numerous local, national and international scientific conferences.
