Kathleen A. Cooney, M.D. is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Urology at the University of Michigan Medical Center. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. Her clinical interests are primarily in the field of genitourinary oncology.
Dr. Cooney received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Cooney went on to receive her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. While there, she won the prestigious Lillie M. Erk Prize.
Dr. Cooney then moved to the University of Michigan (U of M) where she completed her residency training in Internal Medicine and spent a year as the Chief Medical Resident. Dr. Cooney remained at the U of M as a fellow in Hematology/Oncology. Her postdoctoral training was completed in the laboratory of David Ginsburg, M.D., where she pursued molecular genetic studies of Type 2B von Willebrand Disease. During this time, Dr. Cooney was awarded several grants and Fellowship awards including the Clinical Oncology Fellowship from the American Cancer Society and a Department of Veteran Affairs Career Development Award.
More recently, Dr. Cooney has redirected her research interests and is primarily focused on the identification of genetic defects in sporadic and hereditary forms of prostate cancer. She has established a clinical database to study the inheritance pattern of prostate cancer which will be an important resource for future studies.
