The Jack Lapides  Professor of Urology

David A. Bloom, M.D., received the M.D. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1971. After an internship in surgery at the University of California, LosAngeles, he completed residencies in general surgery (1976) and urology (1980) both at UCLA, in addition to a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Institute of Urology of the University of London, England. In 1980, Dr. Bloom received appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and Staff Urologist at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery and named Chief of Pediatric Urology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1983.  In 1984, Dr. Bloom joined the faculty at the  University of Michigan as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Urology. In 1986, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery and achieved his present rank of Professor of Surgery in 1993. He is currently Lapides Professor of Urology.

Dr. Bloom’s clinical and scholarly interests are in the areas of genitourinary reconstruction, lower urinary tract dysfunction, genital anomalies, neurogenic bladder laparoscopy, and medical history. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Urology, Urology, Contemporary Urology, and the Journal of Endourology, and has been the urology consultant for the Stedman’s Medical Dictionary since 1992. Dr. Bloom is well recognized in the field of pediatric urology. He is a member of numerous organizations of the specialty, and currently serves as Chair for the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Urology, and as historian for the Society for Pediatric Urology. Since 1997, Dr. Bloom has been listed in the publication Who’s Who in the World.

Dr. Bloom has a solid record of clinical and service contributions. He served as Chief of Pediatric Urology in the Department of Surgery from 1984-2001. He has been a member of the Medical School Admissions Committee and has twice served on the Executive Committee on Clinical Affairs. Dr. Bloom was appointed Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs on July 1, 2000.
