General Urology

All clinical faculty of the Department of Urology provide general urologic care, though some physicians have chosen to specialize in this area. These urologists include: Dr. John Wei, Dr. Richard Dorr, Dr. Joseph Cerny, and Dr. Gary Faerber.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
The Department of Urology treats bladder and kidney infections whether they are recurrent or complicated. We also provide surgery when necessary (e.g. urethral diverticulum in women).

Urinary Incontinence and Neurourology
Edward McGuire, M.D. and Gary Faerber, M.D. have extensive experience in evaluating and treating patients with complex voiding disorders. A comprehensive Urodynamic laboratory which includes fiber optic cystometry and flourourodynamic capabilities for simultaneous detrusor and external sphincter function and behavior is available for in-depth evaluation of neurogenic voiding disorders secondary to such conditions as spinal cord injury, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disorders, etc. have extensive experience in evaluating and treating patients with complex voiding disorders. A comprehensive Urodynamic laboratory which includes fiber optic cystometry and flourourodynamic capabilities for simultaneous detrusor and external sphincter function and behavior is available for in-depth evaluation of neurogenic voiding disorders secondary to such conditions as spinal cord injury, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disorders, etc.

Dr. McGuire and Faerber also have very extensive experience in the reconstructive urologic surgery.  This includes bladder enlargement or replacement procedures and urethral repair and reconstruction.  Lower urinary tract reconstruction can be very complicated and multistage.   Bladders can be rebuilt and the urethra continence function strengthened or replaced with a neourethra.  This requires precise diagnosis, and careful planning of the staged reconstruction.  The urology clinic has the requisite equipment and personnel to do this, and to carry out the treatment plan. 

Another important area is the long term care of persons with neurological diseases or injuries as these very often affect urinary tract function.  The neurological diseases or injuries as these very often affect urinary tract function.  The neuro-urology team follows a large population of patients with spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis.  Our objective is the prevention of all urologic complications associated with a neurogenic bladder

 

Female Urology
Edward McGuire, M.D. and Gary Faerber, M.D. have a primary interest in urologic disorders affecting women including urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction, pelvic prolapse, urinary tract infection, and other bladder disorders. Dr. McGuire is co-director of a newly established Continence Clinic run jointly with Dr. John DeLancey, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan. This special comprehensive multidisciplinary clinic was established to treat female patients with complicated urinary incontinence. Multiple treatment modalities are made available to patients which allow for appropriate individualized care.

Stress Urinary Incontinence
The treatment of complicated incontinence in Urology starts with a thorough fluorodynamic evaluation and may include simple medication or various surgical procedures, from outpatient collagen injection to sophisticated reconstructive operations.

The urology faculty interested in female urology deal with vaginal prolapse conditions which often are associated with stress incontinence symptoms.  These conditions may require gynecologic assistance which is readily available in the clinic setting and in the operating room.

Fistulae Repair
Urinary leakage from an abnormal connection (fistula) is uncommon but not infrequently found when evaluating the complicated incontinent patient. The Department of Urology has extensive knowledge and experience in this area.

Prostatic Obstruction (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)
This condition is treated by the standard "TURP" or "TUIP", and the "electrovaporization" technique.  Other new techniques are currently under study.
